Clinical Insomnia

If, for at least the last 3 months, for 3 or more nights in a week, you have been experiencing difficulties initiating or maintaining sleep, for no obvious medical or chemical reason, chances are you have clinical insomnia

Sometimes you just can’t make yourself sleep, either because you have a hard time initiating sleep – more than half an hour – or you keep waking up in the middle of the night or just wake up far too early. Or you get a proper amount of sleep but wake up drowsy, tired or aching. These situations define insomnia and can be due to a number of circumstances.

Why do you have insomnias?

Usually insomnias co-occur with other medical and psychological conditions, which means they may be a symptom of those conditions, a cause or even a consequence.

The most common medical conditions associated with insomnias:

  • Diabetes
  • Coronary heart disease
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
  • Arthritis
  • Fibromyalgia and other pain conditions

40% to 50% of insomnias occur at the same time as a mental health condition, most frequently with:

  • Bipolar range disorders
  • Depressive range disorders
  • Anxiety range disorders
Why treat insomnias?

Sleep is a fundamental piece of overall wellbeing and whenever it is affected, consequences for normal functioning are widespread to all areas. When you don’t get enough sleep and/or adequate quality, you pay a very high toll:

  • Immune system is weakened
  • You become accident-prone
  • Learning ability drops dramatically
  • Attention, concentration, memory, creativity – all operate at low levels
  • Emotions like anxiety and irritability dominate
  • Interpersonal relationships become affected

As a result your overall health decreases and you become subject to a number of medical and psychological problems.

International guidelines are clear on treatment: no matter the causes for your insomnia and what you are doing in order to take care of those causes, you should treat insomnias separately.

How do you eliminate insomnias?

Insomnias can be reverted very effectively and quickly as it is well researched what works best – all you need is an expert on this very specific matter and you can find several as part of Brain Solutions of Oficina de Psicologia.
