Portuguese Red Cross Hospital
Founded by the Portuguese Red Cross, the Hospital Cruz Vermelha has, over the decades, become a national reference in the provision of specialised healthcare, combining innovation, clinical quality, and a strong ethical commitment.
Inaugurated in 1965, it originated from the Casa de Saúde de Benfica, established to support casualties of the colonial war, with a particular focus on trauma care and neurosurgery. In 1981, it became notable for the creation of the Haemodialysis Clinic and the first Renal Transplant Unit, also performing the first kidney and liver transplants in Portugal. A few years later, in 1985, it introduced CT scanning (TAC), strengthening its diagnostic capabilities. A major modernisation programme in 1998 consolidated its position as a leading hospital unit.
