Pelvic floor repair treatment

Pelvic floor weakness is a problem that affects a large number of women and can disturb their daily routine. Rehabilitation can be done through an exercise plan for strengthening the muscles or by undergoing a small surgery, when exercising is not enough.

The pelvic floor is composed of a group of muscles in the pelvis that make up the floor. The muscles involve the urethra, the vagina and the anus and should, along with the sphincter muscles, control those openings, stopping urine and feces loss. The muscles must also be able to support different kinds of abdominal pressure. If the pelvic floor muscles become weak, urine loss can occur due to cough, sneezes or exercising, for example.

According to Clínica Universitária de Navarra, more than 40% of women over 55 years old suffer from this problem. Exercising the pelvic floor muscles can be an effective way to minimize or prevent urine loss. When exercising doesn’t work, a short and barely invasive surgery can be done. In 90% of the situations, a synthetic mesh is implanted during a short intervention that lasts around 25 minutes.

You can find out if you are eligible for this kind of procedure by getting a second opinion, also available at Clínica Universitária de Navarra.
