Depression

Depression is a mood disorder that can be treated. Professional help is essential to ease symptoms and regain a more positive outlook on life.

Depression is a mood disorder that can cause a person to feel persistently sad and lose interest and pleasure in their usual activities. According to the World Health Organization, it is the most common health problem worldwide, and according to the Portuguese Association of Psychologists, it affects around 10% of citizens in Portugal.

The fact that we sometimes experience feelings of sadness is not synonymous with depression. Feeling sad and frustrated is common when we are going through a more complex life situation with negative consequences.

Depression is a more long-lasting condition and may present as symptoms a persistently sad, anxious, irritable, empty or bored mood, loss of interest in activities that used to give us pleasure, and loss of energy or initiative to do usual things. Changes in appetite may occur: some people feel much more like eating and others, on the contrary, start eating much less. Sleep disorders are also common, with insomnia (difficulty falling asleep or waking up frequently at night), or hypersomnia (needing to sleep many more hours).

In depression, the person may experience feelings of guilt, worthlessness and hopelessness. It is common to have difficulty concentrating on household tasks, work or school, and feel incapable of making decisions. The person may start to have more agitated or slower movements in an unusual way, which is usually visible to those closest to them.

The most common physical symptoms associated with depression are headaches and gastrointestinal problems that do not respond to conventional treatment.

EARLY DIAGNOSIS

Depression can be treated at any stage of its condition, but an early diagnosis greatly helps in the effectiveness of treatment.

Psychological support has proven to be very beneficial for all types of depression (mild, moderate and severe). By talking to a psychologist, it is possible to reach a diagnosis and address the problems in order to develop skills to deal with depression and overcome it.

In some cases, in addition to psychological support, it is also necessary to consult a psychiatrist, when a therapeutic plan with a prescription for medication is necessary.
